I came away from this book genuinely moved, and genuinely changed in how I think about what it means to recover a woman’s life from the historical record, or to acknowledge, with honesty, that some recoveries are simply not possible. Millie’s willingness to let the gaps remain gaps, to make them visible on the page rather than paper over them, felt to me like an act of profound historical integrity.
