The first book review is here forThese Saints are Stones! Justin Lacour reviewed the book for Trampoline: A Journal of Poetry. Lacour writes:
In her debut collection of poems, These Saints are Stones, Millie Tullis observes “Mormons have no saints/save the pioneers.” In a similar vein, an epigraph to the book by Susan Elizabeth Howe, states “I had no saints, so I turned to my ancestors.” Just so, Tullis often turns to her Mormon pioneer ancestors, particularly Martha, her great, great, great grandmother, and Alice, Martha’s mother and sister wife. However, Tullis’ poems do not just record family history, but give a voice to those voices marginalized by history. In this collection, Tullis wants her ancestors to function as saints, that is as inspiration, community, and help to the poet’s life.
